For the disabled
There was at one time, only
one vehicle able to meet the
needs of the disabled as a
taxi, and that was the traditional
London cab. But they were
in short supply and unable
to meet the demand. Calls
from individuals at private
addresses, nursing homes,
day centres and our hospitals
showed there was not enough
to cover.
As a result, several garages
answered our plea and invested
in the Mercedes Vito vans
and had them converted to
be wheelchair accessible.
These vehicles have a larger
door opening and bigger interior.
Drivers have knowledge of
the use of ramps and how to
secure the wheelchair safely.
They are also given the code
of practise for taxi and public
service vehicle drivers issued
by the Portsmouth Disability
Forum. This helps them understand
the needs and feelings of
disabled customers.
In the space of 2 years we
have doubled our fleet of
wheelchair accessible vehicles
and drivers. And do you know
what
it's still not enough!
